Atlas is seeking a dedicated Roadway Construction Inspector for remote transportation projects in U.S. National Parks and Forests. The ideal candidate will be responsible for observing and reporting on the quality of construction activities for roadway projects across the western and central U.S. This role requires building and maintaining positive working relationships with contractors, subconsultants, and state DOT or FHWA staff, while ensuring all construction work meets project standards.
The Roadway Construction Inspector will work directly with a site project engineer and DOT or FHWA project manager, who will set clear expectations regarding work quality, efficiency, and technical development. The successful candidate will communicate technical requirements and deliverables effectively to contractors and clients.

Key Responsibilities:
Understand and address client and customer needs to ensure project success.
Operate in strict adherence to client safety protocols at all times.
Complete all required documentation, including daily Inspector’s Daily Reports.
Review and verify the accuracy and completeness of the Contractor’s Daily Reports, Quality Control Supervisor’s Daily Reports, and all other field documentation.
Perform inspections to ensure quality workmanship, including field measurements of construction materials and products.
Monitor the Contractor’s quality control operations, traffic control measures, and any special environmental contract requirements.
Identify changes, errors, or necessary field adjustments to contract documents and recommend corrective actions to the Project Engineer.
Monitor the construction schedule for compliance and ensure timely progress.
May assume Project Engineer duties in the absence of the representative.
Competencies:
Strong knowledge and certifications in roadwork inspections, including compaction, gradation, asphalt paving, concrete testing (compressive and flexural), surveying, reinforcement methods, drainage structures, subgrade stabilization, and traffic safety.
Proficient understanding of contract plans and specifications for highway construction.
Knowledge of OSHA guidelines and safe work practices.
Expertise in highway construction inspection services, including:
Asphalt paving and hot plant inspection
Bridge construction and Portland cement batch plant inspection
Construction staking and traffic control
Drainage structures (culverts, inlets, ditches)
Erosion control, landscaping, and mulching
Highway earthwork, grading, and materials testing
Pavement striping and post-tensioned concrete construction
Recycled asphalt construction (milling and grinding)
Structural concrete and steel construction
Wetlands mitigation, retaining walls, and pavement preservation
Underground utilities and sanitary sewer systems
Minimum Qualifications:
Construction Inspector I
3-7 years of progressively responsible experience as a highway construction inspector, or
NICET Level III Certification (Construction) with 3 years of applicable experience, or
Engineering Degree with 3 years of relevant experience.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to meet internal vehicle operation requirements and maintain a valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record.
Willingness to travel to remote job sites across the western U.S. for extended periods.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
Compensation:
$30hr-$45hr
The expected salary range for the position is displayed in accordance with the state’s law. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience.
