Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Substation Physical Designer in Butte, Montana

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated CAD Substation Designer to join our Engineering Services team. As a Power System Designer, you will be responsible for ensuring the reliable and secure operation of power systems while designing and implementing protection and control schemes. Your expertise in power system design will provide solutions and services that help our customers protect and control critical electrical infrastructure and power systems worldwide.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Create detailed physical and electrical designs and prepare CAD drawings and other project documentation.

  2. Design drawings include substation layout, electrical elevations and details, grounding plan and details, foundation plan and details, conduit plan and details, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams etc.

  3. Provide design engineering support to project technical leads.

  4. Develop diverse set of drawings for review/construction with varying complexities.

  5. Develop and maintain an acceptable level of expertise in SEL equipment and solutions and industry design duties

  6. Assist and mentor drafters with technical tasks.

  7. Perform design reviews for quality assurance and provide valuable feedback

    Required Qualification

    Associate degree in EET, CAD, Drafting, or relevant discipline; or possess equivalent experience for each academic year

    Experience working with 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings

    6+ years of relevant experience with high voltage electrical design, including several projects in substation physical/civil/structural design

    Attention to details and possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

    Ability to learn concepts and technical details of products

    Ability to work with a moderate level of technical supervision, accepting ownership of assigned responsibilities

    Demonstrated competency in CAD drafting (AutoCAD, MicroStation, Inventor).

    Understanding of the installation requirements for substation equipment and structures

    Willing to travel as needed (<20%)

    Preferred Experience

    Advanced knowledge in substation design, and calculations

    Experience working in the electrical utility and consulting industry

    Location

    While being located in Phoenix, AZ is preferred, we are open to considering other locations with periodic travel to the Boise office. Additional locations include: Spokane Valley, WA; Pullman, WA; Billings, MT; Butte, MT; Lewiston, ID; Boise, ID; Albuquerque, NM and Provo, UT.

    Pay Range Data

    Designer II $26.20 - $39.28 per hour

Designer III $29.23 - $45.67 per hour

We are open to reviewing additional candidates with more or less experience and the pay range may differ if filled at a different level. Our pay ranges are determined by job, responsibility, and location. We base our starting pay offer and title on location and job-related factors such as candidate experience, training, knowledge, and skills.
