Job Description Summary

The Vice President (VP), Insurance Strategy and Segment Effectiveness at Humana will spearhead the top-line Strategy Practice for the Insurance Segment. This includes strategic oversight across Medicare Advantage (Individual and Group), Medicaid, Medicare Supplement, Specialty, and Prescription Drug Plans. Additionally, this pivotal role encompasses leadership of two vital teams focused on Culture and Associate Engagement, and a robust centralized unit for Project Management, Process Improvement, Learning, and Change. These teams collaborate closely with senior leaders within the Insurance segment and across the enterprise, addressing crucial opportunities and challenges that impact both business performance and the experience of our customers and teammates.

As the Vice President (VP) of Insurance Strategy and Segment Effectiveness at Humana, you are positioned at the precipice of three pivotal areas:

  1. Insurance Strategy Practice: With the SVP, Strategy and the Insurance leadership team, , you will work to craft the strategic vision for the Insurance segment, architecting top-line strategies that enhance our market position and operational performance. Your role involves synthesizing complex market data and trends to develop robust, forward-looking strategies that propel our Medicare, Medicaid, and Specialty lines towards sustained growth, profitability, and quality

  2. Culture and Associate Engagement: Championing a vibrant workplace culture, you will drive initiatives that foster an engaging and inclusive environment. Your leadership will ensure that all team members feel valued and understood, directly contributing to their professional growth and personal well-being.

  3. Project Management, Process Improvement, Learning and Change: As the steward of project and process excellence, you will oversee a central team dedicated to refining our operations and implementing transformative projects. Through your guidance, this team will enhance efficiency, streamline operations, and foster innovation across the segment.

In this high-impact role, your strategic acumen and leadership will help define the future trajectory of Humana’s largest business units. Your ability to navigate complex challenges, articulate clear solutions, and drive strategic implementation will be key to our success.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership : As an Insurance strategy leader, you will orchestrate the development and execution of top-tier strategic initiatives. You will align these initiatives with Humana’s overarching goals, ensuring they deliver tangible results in terms of business performance and operational excellence.

  • Strategic Material Development: You will spearhead the creation of high-impact strategic materials that communicate Humana's vision and progress. Your work will directly support decision-making and strategic direction at the highest levels of the organization.

  • Board of Directors: Prepare comprehensive and insightful presentations that outline strategic initiatives, performance metrics, and future opportunities for Humana. Assist the Board in understanding the market dynamics and internal achievements, guiding their oversight and governance responsibilities.

  • Management Team: Develop detailed reports and strategic plans for the Management Team, providing them with the necessary information to steer day-to-day operations and long-term strategic directions. Align departmental strategies with corporate goals.

  • Investor Day: Craft compelling narratives and presentations for Investor Day that highlight the Insurance Segment’s strategic achievements and prospects. Clearly articulate the value proposition of Humana’s initiatives to help maintain and grow investor confidence and engagement.

  • Research and Analysis : Dive deep into industry trends and competitive landscapes to inform and shape strategic directions.

  • Operating Cadence Management: You will oversee the regular operational rhythms of the Insurance Segment, ensuring strategic alignment and operational efficiency. This includes maintaining a dashboard of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that provide real-time insights into the segment’s performance.

  • Segment Performance Reviews: Lead the development of materials for regular performance reviews with the CEO and the Management Team. These reviews are essential for discussing current results against KPIs, identifying areas for improvement, and aligning on strategic initiatives.

  • Insurance President Leadership Meetings: Facilitate and prepare for regular leadership meetings led by the Insurance President, where performance metrics are reviewed and discussed. Aggregate and present relevant data, ensuring that discussions are focused and productive.

  • Cost Transformation and Administrative Savings: Lead the segment’s efforts in cost transformation to achieve administrative savings goals. Partner with segment leadership to identify opportunities for efficiency improvements, overseeing the implementation of cost-saving measures, and monitoring their impact on the segment’s financial health

  • Presentation and Communication Materials: Develop and refine presentation materials and talking points for the Insurance President for both internal and external engagements. Clearly craft messages that convey the segment's strategy, performance, and future directions, ensuring consistency and professionalism.

  • Cultural Advocacy : Lead by example to promote a positive work culture. Develop and implement strategies that enhance associate engagement and satisfaction, ensuring our workplace remains a beacon of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Operational Excellence : Guide the project management and process improvement teams in establishing best practices that enhance productivity and effectiveness. Ensure that strategic projects are not only envisioned but also well executed and brought to fruition.

  • Mentorship and Development : Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement. Mentor emerging leaders within the organization, preparing them to take on future challenges with confidence and skill.

  • Communication and Influence : Effectively communicate strategies and results to key stakeholders, including Humana’s Management Team and Board of Directors.

Qualifications

  • Educational Credentials : Possess an MBA, MPH, PhD, or a graduate degree in a relevant management field, complemented by outstanding academic credentials is preferred.

  • Extensive Strategy Experience : At least 6 years of full-time, post-graduate degree work experience from a top-tier strategy consulting firm, specifically focusing on healthcare.

  • Cultural Leadership and Associate Engagement : Demonstrated ability to lead and shape organizational culture is essential. Experience designing and implementing initiatives that significantly enhance associate engagement and well-being including the ability to leverage insights from associate feedback mechanisms such as surveys and focus groups to drive meaningful change.

  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) : Proven track record in leading DEI initiatives. Capability to foster an inclusive environment that respects and values diverse perspectives and promotes equal opportunities for all associates.

  • Learning and Development Acumen : Experience in establishing and leading learning and development programs tailored to enhance skills and competencies across the organization.

  • Project and Process Management Expertise : Possess certifications in Project Management Professional (PMP) or Six Sigma, though not mandatory, these are preferred. Your experience should include managing high-stakes projects and facilitating process improvements that align with strategic objectives.

  • Healthcare Industry Insight : A broad and well-developed understanding of the healthcare ecosystem, with a proven ability to anticipate industry, market, and competitor trends and translate these into strategic insights for the business.

  • Leadership and Talent Development : Demonstrated experience in identifying, cultivating, and motivating talent. Skilled in building high-performing teams and attracting top talent both internally and externally.

  • Strategic Implementation : A strong history of delivering value through strategic initiatives, demonstrating that the essence of strategy lies not only in planning but also in effective execution and integration.
